Theatre Delicatessen | Inspiring artists. Transforming spaces.
Theatre Deli Sheffield have confirmed that they are continuing with plans to launch a new venue in the city despite the Arts Council England (ACE) decision not to support the company as a National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) over the next four years.
Theatre Deli, the groundbreaking ‘pop-up’ arts organisation that for the last three years has taken residence in the ex-Woolworths on The Moor, had made an application for funding through ACE which would have supported the company’s work in Sheffield for the next four years.
Roland Smith, Co-Artistic Director of Theatre Deli said:
“We are, of course, disappointed with the Arts Council announcement, particularly as our conversations with them had seemed so positive. The demands on Arts Council by larger and more established organisations means that it is difficult for younger, local and regional arts organisations to break through. We are committed to continuing our work with people from across the Sheffield community.”
Over the last three years Theatre Deli Sheffield has partnered with developer Aberdeen Assets, to make use of the ex-Woolworths on The Moor as performance space, staging new theatre from across the UK, and a creative hub providing support for local artists.
Most recently, Theatre Deli Sheffield played host to the Migration Matters Festival as part of Refugee Week. Prior to this was the hugely successful ‘Pick N Mix Season’ which drew together work from 25 different artists and theatre companies, and the immersive theatre production of The Great Gatsby which was staged over Christmas.

Theatre Delicatessen exists to enrich and enlarge our cultural and creative lives.
We do this in three ways:
• Supporting artists in the creation of their work, with a specific focus on visceral artforms that audiences can touch, play and participate in
• Collaborating with property developers, local authorities, and institutions to build alternative cultural spaces in the heart of communities that encourage people to effortlessly engage and participate with the arts, live events and creativity.
• Exploring tools that further our mission to support people to grow their creative potential, including new technologies, education and relationships
